The first time you saw me / you reached out like I was your child / she dragged you out of the building with black dog behind you / and I went upstairs to the quiet // Sundowner, you once were a young girl / like I was / You still step so lightly / your body blown homeward / Sundowner, you once called me darling / Months later, I still wonder who that was //
When we were living in Brooklyn, one of the other tenants in our building had what seemed like a pretty harrowing form of dementia. She was very kind and loving to us whenever she - always in the company of one of her caretakers - saw us. Every day, when the light began to fade from the city, she experienced a terror so horrible that she screamed for hours on end - not the petulant screaming teenagers and belligerents produce, but really desperate cries for help and for deliverance from terrible danger. Sundowners' is pretty common amongst dementia patients, but we called elder care just in case. Thankfully, her people were taking as much care of her as they could. She was very small, and had a face that reminded me a lot of Joni Mitchell. She always moved to stroke my hair and definitely had a big crush on @avivocado. I'm just now getting to setting some of what she inspired to music. I wanted the meter to flex and flow over itself in order to express, musically, some of the temporal fluctuations she seemed to be experiencing, but it took me a while to find the right time and the right harmony. I'm really happy with where this is going now, and wondering where she is today, and if she's still with us.
I may or may not have this ready in time, but I'm playing a show at @mercado_sagrado (at the @thevillagebigsur ) on Sunday. If you're in the area, do come say hi.
