“III” by BANKS
Of all the cool singers doing wonky shit with her instrumentals, Banks has always seemed like they were just kinda left out. It’s clear that she has an ear for good production but man, do some of the sounds on this record and her previous just clash against her voice real horribly. When she writes and records a straight up pop song it usually skaps unreasonably hard, but she doesn’t seem that interested in that which is cool, she does what she wants and that kinda swagger definitely manifests in some of my fav moments on this album-especially with a song like “The Fall” where we get rapping Banks and its actually kinda cool. This facet is counterpointed by the understated and tasteful closer “What About Love?” However, no song really felt like all that necessary to come back to and it all just felt so samey. Like the instrumentals are cool but also, they just fall into tired cliches I’ve come to expect from being a wonky fan and it was just a bit too notable (also flex, I am a wonky fan). Banks fans I’m hoping will dig this because I’m kinda unsure of who else will, maybe like socially accepted alternative kinda vibe?
